The Artistic Work of Yahav Wiener
The Artistic Work of Yahav Wiener
The abrupt and brutal end to Yahav Wiener's life halted the development of who could have been one of the most significant creative filmmakers in Israeli cinema. Despite the relatively modest size of Winner's filmography, the cinematic richness of his films, however few, cannot be overlooked.
Winner persistently showcased the area surrounding Gaza, a region rarely seen in Israeli cinema, through a distinct and unique cinematic aesthetic. More importantly, he worked closely with the members of Kfar Aza, and his works centered on his kibbutz. Wiener ensured that key roles in acting, production, costumes, and artistic design were filled by his community members. This approach aimed to uniquely convey the essence of life near the volatile border, making the communal nature of production an integral part of the filmmaking process.
At the festival meeting, we will discuss Yahav's unique working methods and his legacy with his widow, filmmaker Shaylee Atary Wiener, along with members of Kfar Aza who participated in his films.
